2/21 Club Meeting Overview

We had our second official meeting last night, February 21st.  It went very well, it's exciting to see our club developing. Thanks to everyone who made it out. And to those who didn't, it's never too late to join!
The book we read in the last month was The Bonesetter's Daughter, and we discussed it last night. The general consensus was that the book was a great read. Some of the main topics discussed were:

  • Asian culture- books like this are always interesting to read because it's an opportunity to learn about people who live and think much differently than we do in America. It was said that it was cool to read about a Chinese woman who is living in two worlds- living and practicing Chinese culture at home with her mother, but living in America and having to fit in with a different society away from home.
  • Family relationships- this book focuses a lot of the strength of family bonds. This plays in to the first point mentioned, because family is everything in Asian cultures. The relationship between Ruth and her mother changes a lot throughout the book and is something we all were able to relate to.
  • The development of Ruth in her relationships- Ruth changed a lot as she gained more perspective on her mother's life, and it gave her strength in her own life. Her relationship with her boyfriend became less manipulative and hurtful, as well as her relationship with his two daughters. She became more of her own person, and was proud of her family.
All at the meeting agreed the book was well worth reading. Thanks Juliana for the great pick!

February-March Book Choice
At the meeting we also voted on the three book choices presented by Emi. The book that we chose is The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle.

Next Meeting
Next month Rachel is selecting the book and meeting place, and she has decided to do a lunch meeting. To encourage more club members, we will be going to lunch on Wednesday, March 21st at 12pm at Paradise Bakery. We hope that people here at work will find this time a little more convenient than evening meetings. Our  meetings are normally on Tuesdays, but one of our members does not work on Tuesdays, so for this lunch meeting we will be making an exception.

So go get your hands on The Last Unicorn and get reading! And keep checking the blog, we are hoping to get it a little more functional for members to post on...we will keep you updated!

Haven't we all felt like the "last" of our own kind at one point in time? Well, can't wait to start the book.
